Symptoms and Complications of Giardia Infection

July 1st, 2007

Symptoms of Giardiasis, infection by Giardia, may include stomach cramps, diarrhea, gas, belching, bloating, greasy stools, nausea or upset stomach. Symptoms may occur 1 to 2 weeks after infection and usually last from 1 to 3 weeks. Some individuals with Giardiasis are asymptomatic, meaning that they do not exhibit symptoms.

Complications may include weight loss and dehydration as a result of these symptoms. Pregnant women, the young, and the elderly are more likely to suffer dehydration as a result of diarrhea and are advised to drink plenty of fluids while ill.
